Since you dont have any means or access to continuous ammo source(and they are less effective and more expensive than the previous fallout games), i reckon the best thing to do is having one weapon for each ammo type, and distribute your tactical options according to the toal count(for example i have 9 guns with me, 3 of them are semis, 3 of them scatterguns and 3 of them are automatic guns, organized to their respective tiers). As for the best gun, it really doesnt matter that much. You either go full big guns or not at all. Saving for harder fight thing wont work because you shouldnt want to haul that massive thing everywhere you go. And if you do pick skills that do upgrade damage of “rifles” or “pistols”, keep in mind that there are multiple pistols that use different kinds of ammo. If you’re picking skills that increase the damage of certain weapons(like pistols) you would still be better off having a long range weapon of some sort and a melee weapon. Generally speaking, you won’t want to limit yourself to just one weapon.

VATS is your best friend in this game, don’t be afraid to use him. That means headshotting mirelurks and humans(and most creatures generally speaking), shooting mutant suicider’s bomb hand, and shooting ghouls in the legs so they can’t hurt you(and finish them off with a melee weapon). So yah, basically a 10mm pistol, a pipe pistol, a shotgun of some sort, and a energy weapon of some sort(Laser Musket can use this space and also fill up space as a rifle).īasically in the early game, you want to conserve ammo and go for the weak spots of enemies if you can’t one hit them. Basically, in the early game, you want to carry around 3-5 weapons that each use different ammo, and maybe a melee weapon(since you don’t need ammo at all).
